In case you were wondering...
This update may have sparked your curiosity about our tests and breed results. Following are answers to questions you may have.
I purchased a test recently. How do I know if my sample was screened for all 430+ breeds?
Any DNA samples analyzed on or after June 2nd will leverage this ancestry update and your report will show any of the 430+ breeds detected in your dog’s DNA.
Does this mean my previous breed percentages change?
Previous breed reports and percentages will not change. This update applies to DNA samples analyzed at our lab going forward.
How big is the Wisdom Panel breed database?
With this new update, our reference database—which has long been the world’s largest—increased to 31k+ samples. And the size of the database does matter. By having a large and diverse reference library, we’re able to compare your dog’s genetic profile against millions of possible breed combinations and deliver the most accurate breed results.
Can Wisdom Panel Dog DNA tests distinguish between closely related breeds?
Yes! Wisdom Panel’s breed detection system delivers the most comprehensive breed results. We use over 250,000 dogs in our phasing panel, which enables us to read meaningful inherited chunks of DNA rather than scattered pieces. With this data, we can deliver more detailed and reliable breed results.
For example, our test can differentiate between breeds that are genetically similar, like the Alaskan Husky and Alaskan Malamute, or the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier. We can also distinguish between subtypes of a breed. With this ancestry update, for example, we report on both the American Brittany and the French Brittany.
In short, when we include breeds in our breed report, it is because we are confident we can differentiate between the 430+ breeds we test for.
Will breed results explain my dog’s physical traits?
Your dog’s breed results will let you see the different breeds found in their DNA. From looking at those breeds, you can make some guesses about why they have certain features. But that’s just what they’d be: guesses.
Really understanding the "why" behind your pup’s physical traits requires knowing the genes they inherited from each parent. The 50+ trait tests included in our Essential and Premium dog DNA tests analyze how the genetic variants passed down to your pup contribute to traits like their coat characteristics and body features—info you can use to inform grooming routines and veterinary care.
