Powerful and intelligent dogs.
Can be affectionate with children and often make a good family dog with careful supervision.
Intelligent, alert, and powerful dogs.
The Argentine Dogo was originally bred for various purposes including the guarding of people and/or property. Individual members of this breed will benefit from firm and dedicated training to temper this guarding tendency, and thus help to maintain safety as a household companion.
Requires firm, consistent obedience training and socialization to prevent reservation with strangers and to ensure the dog is controllable in all situations.
Did You Know?
These powerful and intelligent dogs first arrived on the scene in the 1920s. Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez and his brother used the now-extinct Cordoba Fighting dog and other breeds to create what they considered to be a superior hunting dog – one that was less aggressive and a suitable family dog too.
Sadly, some Argentine Dogos have been crossbred for fighting, which has led to a ban in some countries, including Australia and the UK. The truth however, is they can be very affectionate.
It’s also true that some of them have been called pirates. But that’s only because those born with a black patch over their eye are locally known as ‘piratas’ (which means pirates in Spanish).
