Bernese Mountain Dog

About

The good news is you don’t have to live on a mountain to enjoy the companionship of one of these gentle and loving dogs. Once upon time, though, they would have been most at home in mountain pastures.
In fact, they were all-round working dogs, used to guard the farm, herd cows and even pull carts loaded with milk cans to the dairy.
The name ‘Bernese Mountain Dog’ is a rough translation of the German ‘Berner Sennenhund’, which literally means ‘Bernese Alpine herdsman’s dog.’
Luckily, they were rescued from near extinction in the 1800s by Swiss cynologist (dog expert) Franz Schertenlieb. It was he who helped form the calm, easy-to-please and faithful pet many of us know and love today.

Intelligent, alert, and usually gentle dogs.
