Betty and Bean—a sibling reunion no one saw coming

For these two sisters, their genetic relationship was hiding right under everyone's nose.

Betty and Bean were once strays on the streets of Texas. They were picked up separately by animal control and forced to share a kennel in an overcrowded, high-kill shelter. The two became inseparable and were listed for adoption as a bonded pair. Finding a home together, however, took some time.

After more than a year in both shelter and foster care—and a transport to Canada—Betty and Bean found their match. These two cuties were adopted by a couple who adored them as much as they adored each other. So when the family moved to the U.K. for work, Betty and Bean made the trip across the pond. Once in London, the pups’ pet mom, Julie, started an instagram account to document their story. And it turns out, these two were hiding a plot twist she wasn’t expecting.

Eager to fill in the gaps of Betty and Bean’s past, Julie got a Wisdom Panel dog DNA test. She knew she’d learn about their breed mix, health risks, and traits, but there was one insight that took her breath away. These two dogs weren’t just best friends, they shared the same parents, making them full sisters.

Though Julie never would have guessed on her own that they were siblings, knowing Betty and Bean’s genetic relationship made the other pieces of their story fall into place. It explained their instant close-knit relationship and the similarities in their expressions and mannerisms.

Flash forward to today, and these two sisters are living their best life—traveling, exploring, and reminding their pet parents daily why adopting them was one of the best decisions they ever made.
