Did You Know?
The Portuguese Podengo Médio is the medium-sized version of this breed, compared to the Podengo Pequeno (small) and Podengo Grande (large).
Hardy, lively and smart, their origins date back thousands of years to Asia Minor, before they were brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Phoenicians.
They were soon found all over the place in northern Portugal, once people realized just how good at hunting they could be. (The Médio was used to mainly hunt vermin and rabbits.)
Their keen senses even led to them hunting rats on the ships of many early explorers, including Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, and Magellan. Today, they still make great companions on life’s journey.
