English Springer Spaniels are intelligent, playful, energetic, and usually friendly with an easy-going nature. Their calm nature combined with their athletic tendencies and stamina make the breed good hunters as well as frequent participants in field trials and obedience sports. However, because of this athleticism, pet English Springer Spaniels need physical and mental stimulation in their family lives. They enjoy retrieving items such as tennis balls and floating toys that also takes advantage of their excellent swimming ability.

The English Springer Spaniel is a direct descendant of the spaniels of fourteenth-century Spain. The English Springer Spaniel as we know it today was established through breeding efforts in England during the 1890's. The breed was designed for springing and retrieving game. Welsh Spaniels, English Springer Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels were often born into the same litter and they would be separated by color and size when determining which of the three categories a pup would fall under. Although the English Springer Spaniel has been a popular breed in the United States for more than two hundred years, the first breed club wasn't actually established until 1924 and American Kennel Club recognition was granted in 1927.
