The Anatolian Shepherd is an intelligent, independent and good-natured breed. Early socialization, as well as firm, consistent and gentle training provided from a young age, are vital in order for the Anatolian Shepherd to mature into a good companion. It is a breed very protective over its family and flock, including pets. An excellent guard and pet for an experienced and dedicated master.

Average Height: 27 - 29 in
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a giant guardian breed originally from the Anatolian Plateau in Turkey. Believed to be more than 6,000 years old, the breed is impressive in size and was designed to intimidate - or at least discourage - potential predators from making an attack. Thus it provided protection for a flock, particularly against larger, dangerous predators. Bred to withstand Turkey's unforgivingly harsh geography and climate, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog has evolved to endure the nomadic lifestyle of the shepherds. The Anatolian Shepherd was introduced to the United States during the 1950s and the Anatolian Shepherd Dog Club of America was formed in 1970. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club as part of the Miscellaneous Class and then the Working Group in 1996.
