The Bergamasco is a shepherd dog which comes from the Italian Alps near the Bergamo region of Italy. The coat of the Bergamasco is comprised of three types of hair that forms into long feltlike matted ‘flocks’, which protect the dog in bad weather. The breed also has fine hair over the eyes which is said to protect the dog from snowblindness in blizzards. Underneath the long coat, the Bergamasco is surprisingly lithe and athletic. Some people believe the breed to be related to the Briard from the north of France, though there are other European corded breeds, such as the Hungarian Puli and Komondor which the breed may have been developed from. Either way, the Bergamasco has been herding sheep in the Italian Alps for a long time. The Bergamasco is currently a member of the AKC Foundation Stock Service.
