The Wirehaired Vizsla was bred in Hungary in the 1930s from a breeding program which was designed to make the Vizsla hardier with a thicker coat to hunt in rough terrain and climate. This was achieved by crossing the Vizsla with the German Wirehaired Pointer to add the wire coat and other breeds are also thought to have been used. As such, it is a distinct breed to the Vizsla, and not a variety. The breed was introduced to the United States in about 1970 and is currently an American Kennel Club Foundation Stock Service breed.
